   Proposal Description:
   Some previous studies suggest that there is decline in weight and BMI before AD onset. Nevertheless there is almost no literature investigating BMI changes after AD onset. Furthermore, little is known about which demographic, genetic, clinical, environmental etc factors may affect the rate of BMI change. As an example co-morbidities, psychiatric conditions, medications, living conditions (i.e. nursing home, etc) may impact the rate of BMI change in patients with AD.      Specific Aim #1: We propose to describe BMI changes over time in AD patients using the NACC Uniform Data Set (UDS). We will use GEE models with BMI as the outcome variable and time as the main predictor variable. Covariates to be considered will include diagnostic center, age, gender, race, education, APOE genotype, depression, other psychiatric co-morbidities, stroke, medical co-morbidities (hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, etc), medication use, type of residence (i.e. regular home vs. nursing home etc), cognitive and  functional status.  Specific Aim #2: We will examine whether AD patients have a differential rate of BMI change compared to cognitively intact participants or participants with MCI.  Specific Aim #3: We aim to examine whether medication use and living environment (nursing home vs. regular home) will each affect BMI change over time by including interaction terms of medication use and / or type of residence and time in GEE models.  Specific Aim #4: We aim to examine whether patients with different baseline BMI have differential rate of BMI change by performing stratification analysis according to BMI categories (underweight <18.5 normal 18.5-25 overweight 25-30 and obese ???30).
